We Are Hiding From The Weather.

My Daughter Christine and her boy friend Don are here visiting for a week and a half. We have been on the move so I haven't had time to sit and do a post for a while. Christine and Don arrived in the dark so when they woke up in the morning they could see the clear blue waters of the Bahamas. We went into town for provisions and then moved the boat back behind Stoking Island. The first day we walked over to the ocean side beach and then up the hill to the monument.

The next day we took Christine and Don to Volley ball beach where they ordered 2 margaritas and a bottle of water for $28.00. Welcome to the Bahamas! We decided to get them out fishing because that's what they came for. Early Sunday morning we left George Town for Calabash Bay near Santa Maria on Long Island. Long Island is a very important spot. This is known as the first stop Columbus made coming to the new world. There is a monument erected for the spot on the hill over looking the ocean side and also a plaque in the water where he first stepped. No pictures.

We had a great sail that day but no one caught any fish. We arrived late and there wasn't any time to explore. We also met up with our friends Jack nd Diane ( just like the song ) who left us a week ago. We are now traveling with them again for a few days. The next day we set sail for Conception Island. This is another protected island. No fishing and no taking of anything from the island. It was a bit of a rough sail but we got there early enough to go to the beach. That's when we decided to stay for two days, what a great spot!

Some times you can take a picture and it turns out great. I like this picture of the boat from the beach.

Before we left George Town I checked the weather and it looked ok until Friday. Conception Island doesn't have any service so I thought we were ok. Our next stop was Cat Island. It was a rough day sailing with swells as high as 10 feet. We arrived late in the day but just enough time to get some groceries. As the food was being put away I could check the weather and to my surprise it was not good. We were anchored on the west side of Cat Island and we were expecting strong westerly winds that night. It was a very rough night and no one got any sleep. We had a squall go through with a 35 knot wind. The next day we sat in 3 to 4 foot waves all day with squalls passing by about every hour. We were stuck in this spot and the weather wasn't going to get any better. We had one marina to go to so after the last squall around 3pm we started for the marina. It was 9 miles away and it took 3 1/2 hours to get there, pounding head on though the waves and wind only getting 3 to 4 knots of speed. We were in a bit of a race with time because the channel getting into the marina was exposed to the westerly waves and it was very narrow and also getting dark. This made it very tricky to get in. We arrived just at dark and we were bounced around a bit coming in but we finally made it to the dock and we were very happy to be there. We will sit here until the weather improves and do boat work and anther jobs that need to be done. I hope we have a little time for relaxing and enjoy the area before heading back to George Town to drop off Christine and Don.
